COURSES

We at FOSS GIS Academy value your career development.  It's for this reason that we offer a number of different training courses across all GIS subject areas.

Introduction to Enterprise GIS with FOSS

Learn how to set up and run a full enterprise GIS with Free and Open Source Software. We will cover the full stack: server platform, spatial database, web map  servers, map tiling and caching, OGC web services and web map clients. Software includes OpenGeo Suite (PostGIS, GeoServer, GeoWebcache, GeoExt, OpenLayers), Quantum GIS (desktop, server and web client)

 Introduction to QGIS

In this beginner/intermediate course we will take you on a tour through the popular QGIS desktop GIS. Our aim is to get you comfortable with FOSS GIS tools for day to day GIS work - be it data capture and visualisation, data management, georeferencing, map production or more complex spatial analysis.

Introduction to PostGIS

This course provides a practical introduction to PostgreSQL with PostGIS, covering the following major themes of spatial databases: installing and configuring PostGIS, viewing PostGIS data in a desktop GIS, spatial SQL queries, spatial joins and spatial indexing. Although the theory is explained, most of the time during the course will be spent on practical examples, ensuring that delegates understand how to view spatial data, query spatial databases, etc. The course aims to equip the delegates with the necessary skills and knowledge to use spatial databases in the daily operations of their respective jobs.

Building web mapping applications with FOSS GIS

In this advanced course we will take you on a tour through some popular parts of the FOSS GIS toolset, focussing on Web GIS. Our aim is to make you comfortable with FOSS GIS tools for creating an online map-centric experience. Tools we will use include GeoDjango, OpenLayers, MapServer, QGIS, Geoserver and PostGIS.

Certificate Course in Introductory Geographic Information Systems (with UP)

The purpose of this programme is to teach the theory and practical components of a Geographic Information System (GIS). This programme will introduce GIS and explain the use of GIS in research, problem solving and decision making. The programme includes a strong practical component to strengthen the understanding of the theoretical concepts. The delegate has the option to do the practical component using either proprietary GIS software or open source GIS software. This is an evaluated distance learning programme, which includes compulsory workshops and continuous assessments.
